Report on Ishizaka Gijuku’s special open lecture “Japanese Yangmingism” by Akihiro Hayashida

On Friday, March 9th, Ishizaka Gijuku held a “Special Open Lecture.
” The guest lecturer was author and Yangming scholar Akihiro Hayashida. He is known for his unique style of explaining Yangming’s philosophy in an easy-to-understand manner, reinterpreting it as a “living text” for modern people.

Yangmingism is a school of thought that represents the Ming dynasty and was advocated by Wang Yangming, who was active during the Ming dynasty in China. It
was popularized in Japan by Nakae Toju in the early Edo period, and became a driving force behind the development of Edo’s popular culture and the modernization of Japan, and is said to have been the study of patriots at the end of the Edo period.
In this course, we learned about the life of Nakae Toju and the teachings of “Japanese Yangmingism,” and learned about the right mindset and behavior that can also be applied to business.

Hayashida Akihiro (author and Yangming scholar)
Born in Nagasaki Prefecture in 1952. Known for his unique research that compares and combines the ideas of Wang Yangming with those of Japanese Zen, Goethe, and R. Steiner. His major works include “The True Introduction to Yangming” and “Yangming: How to Do Unpleasant Jobs with a Smile.”
