TOILETOWA, a bio-toilet that recycles everything, wins both the Bronze Award and the Sustainable Space Award at the Japan Space Design Awards 2024
The TOILETOWA, a fully recycling bio-toilet completed in September 2023 within the Mitomi Konjaku Mura environmental education field operated by Ishizaka Sangyo Co., Ltd. (Head office: Miyoshi Town, Saitama Prefecture; Representative Director: Noriko Ishizaka), has been awarded two prizes: the Bronze Award and the Sustainable Space Award at the Japan Space Design Awards 2024.

The Japan Space Design Awards (sponsored by the Japan Commercial Environmental Design Association and the Japan Space Design Association) are Japan’s largest design awards, established in 2019 to connect the value of spatial design to the future. A total of 801 entries were submitted for the 2024 awards.
“TOILETOWA” won the Bronze Award in the “Public Facilities & Community” category, one of 38 Gold, Silver, and Bronze Award winners. It also won the Sustainable Space Award, one of 28 other awards. The judging criteria were “contemporary,” “creativity,” “social relevance,” “cultural relevance,” “design,” “innovation,” and “sustainability.” The Sustainable Space Award focused on “raising and promoting behaviors that support the SDGs” and “spatial design ideas that encourage action over the next 15 years in key areas for achieving the SDGs.
” “TOILETOWA” is a completely water-efficient bio-toilet designed with a strong desire to revive the cycle that has existed since the Edo period and to convey the importance of microorganisms, essential for soil development. Its walls are made from recycled earthenware made from NS-10, a material recycled from construction waste, and its wastewater recycling system, developed in Japan using a complex fermentation technology that harnesses the power of microorganisms, serves to visualize and communicate the value of “recycling.”
Under the vision of “Zero Waste Design,” we aim to create a society where all global resources are recycled, and will continue to challenge ourselves to go beyond sustainability and achieve regeneration.
